About us
Norway’s International Climate and Forest Initiative (NICFI) is Norway’s largest international effort to combat climate change by protecting the world’s tropical rainforests.
The Norwegian government launched NICFI in 2008, and the initiative has pledged up to NOK 4 billion a year to help save the world’s tropical forests while improving the livelihoods of those who depend on the forest.
NICFI is led by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment (KLD). Norad – the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation – manages a major share of NICFI’s budget on behalf of the Ministry, including the civil society grant scheme.
Through this scheme, Norad funds organisations whose work supports the goals set out in NICFI’s strategic framework. Several Norwegian embassies also manage parts of the NICFI portfolio under delegated authority from the ministry.
NICFI collaborates with forest countries, multilateral organisations, and civil society to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to promote sustainable land use.
Criteria for funding
You can find the criteria for funding here:
- Grants by application – regulation for grants awarded following an open application process
- Grants by agreement – regulation for grants awarded through cooperation agreements with partner countries

Our philosophy
Building a movement
We aim at building a global movement that brings together governments, businesses, indigenous peoples and civil society.
Taking risks
NICFI can only make a partial contribution. Yet, rather than designing smaller problems that we can better control, our strategy is to provide targeted contributions to partners committed to solving the big problems.
Results
We award countries that show will and ability to reduce deforestation, based on the actual results they achieve.
